Musical theater fans were delighted to hear that Jonathan larson‘s (To rent) first off-broadway hit musical, tick, tick … BOOM! was being adapted to the screen, and now that we get closer to the film’s release, the streaming service is finally giving us a preview. The film arrives on Netflix on November 12, but you can now preview the new music video for the opening song, “30/90”. The short video shows us singing and playing the piano Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), who will star in the musical as Jonathan Larson, supported by a band on a small Off-Broadway stage to a full house.
Realized by Hamilton and In the heights star and creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, tick, tick … BOOM! follows the semi-autobiographical story of aspiring playwright Jonathan Larson as his thirtieth birthday looms on the horizon in 1990. In the film, Larson is working on his first musical in several years and has not found his way into industry again. He keeps a day job in a restaurant and wonders if he will ever find the success he is looking for. Surrounded by a group of supportive friends and colleagues, who are represented by star-studded lineup including Alexandra Shipp (Jexi), Robin of Jesus (The boys of the group), Vanessa Hudgens (Musical High School), Jordan fisher (To all the boys: PS I still love you), Bradley Whitford (West wing), and Mr. J. Rodriguez (Pose), Larson finds his way from his 20s to 30s and redefines what success means to him.
The original musical was performed solo by Larson himself on the Off-off-Broadway stages of the Second Stage Theater in Manhattan. The young composer will perform the piece under different titles over the years until he moves on to his next project, To rent. To rent was a huge success, but sadly Larson would never see the fruits of his labor. He died at the age of 35 on the day of To rentfirst Off-Broadway preview performance. To rent became a sensation on Broadway and tick, tickâ¦ BOOM! was brought back to the Broadway stages with new adaptations in the following years, most recently in 2016. Many have been touched by Larson’s musical legacy, including Miranda, who has seen To rent on his seventeenth birthday in 1997, which prompted him to start writing his own musicals.
To rent-the heads who do not know tick, tickâ¦ BOOM! will recognize a lot of the late playwright in the lead role of Garfield (especially his hair). They will also hear a little To rent in the music of this show about aging.
