San Antonio – Bexar County is focused on creating a talented workforce for manufacturing in the region.
The county is working with architects and consultants on the design of a new facility that will offer manufacturing training programs.
“Toyota, HOLT CAT manufacturing, Caterpillar – these types of groups had a say in what spaces actually developed for that, because this is really an industry focused training center,” said Dan Curry, Facilities Manager for Bexar County.
The Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (TX FAME), an organization of 10 private manufacturing companies, will operate the facility.
The new training center will measure approximately 30,000 square feet and will be located in Brooks. Curry said he would have classrooms, computer labs, and a welding lab.
“Indoor and outdoor welding spaces, a machine shop and stuff,” Curry said.
Rey Chavez, president and CEO of the San Antonio Manufacturing Association, said training people in our community for manufacturing jobs is essential.
“It would be nice to have a facility that could accommodate the types of training that manufacturers are eagerly awaiting – robotics, automation, these types of advanced manufacturing,” Chavez said.
Chavez said there are over 1,500 manufacturing companies in our area and many more are considering Texas.
Brooks’ new project will cost between $ 13 million and $ 14 million. Construction could begin in about six months.
“Manufacturers looking to relocate to the state of Texas and more specifically to our area, I think they will benefit from this advantage. For the citizens, it will be able to offer more jobs, and they will be quality jobs with a good salary, ”said Chavez.
Chavez said there are over 1,500 manufacturing companies in our region.
“I think the County, County of Bexar and City of San Antonio and manufacturers in general, especially many manufacturing companies, see that there is this need for a training center to train these people in the various advanced manufacturing jobs. “said Chavez.
