The biggest-budget Chinese film ever is heading to the 2021 Cannes Film Market.
Bona Film Group’s Korean War Epic The Battle of Changjin Lake, co-directed by renowned Chinese filmmakers Chen Kaige, Hark Tsui and Dante Lam with a production budget of $ 200 million, will debut on the Croisette with the Taipei-based distribution studio handling global sales.
The project is notable both for its huge budget of $ 200 million – considerably more than recent Hollywood war epics like that of Sam Mendes. 1917 ($ 95 million) and that of Christopher Nolan Dunkirk ($ 150 million), and even more impressive considering the extent to which production dollars tend to spill over into Beijing’s unorganized film industry – and for the rare behind-the-camera collaboration of three of the directors. most requested in China.
The Battle of Changjin Lake Also stars China’s most bankable leading man, Wu Jing, star of Wolf warrior 2 (2017), which remains the biggest Chinese film in box office history with $ 867 million from a single market. Wu also starred in The Wandering Earth, the first large-scale sci-fi blockbuster in China ($ 700 million).
Twenty-year-old rising star Jackson Yee, top Oscar nominee Better days ($ 230 million) and A small red flower ($ 216 million), co-stars alongside Wu. Duan Yihong (The impending storm, Extraordinary mission) also participates in a special appearance.
A gritty battlefield player, the project is in keeping with the nationalist tone of recent Chinese cinema. The film glorifies Chinese sacrifice and heroism during the 1950 real battle at Changjin Lake during the Korean War (or “the war to resist American aggression and help Korea” as it is called in China). A crucial victory for the Chinese side, the historic battle saw the PLA overcome long difficulties in successfully blowing up the Shuimen Bridge and pushing the US military forces to retreat.
The project is reportedly in post-production, having completed principal photography earlier this year. The distribution workshop says the film is planning a Chinese theatrical release in the fourth quarter of 2021.
