The ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ cast got their own do-it-yourself haircuts, cooked together and even showed up unannounced in each other’s bedrooms while filming the film during the pandemic.
In a video for Entertainment Weekly, “Jurassic World” stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern and DeWanda Wise opened up about the bond they forged while working on the film together. EW reports that the actors also lived together in a British hotel while they were there.
“We used to do everything. We used to cook together, Bryce can do hair, I can do hair. I do [Laura Dern’s daughter] Jaya’s hair, Bryce does haircuts,” Wise said in the video.
“Howard Haircuts! Bryce the Hairdresser!” Howard joked, “My confidence is way more important than my talent.”
Howard returns to the franchise as dinosaur protectionist Claire Dearing, and Dern reprises her role as paleobotanist Ellie Sattler. Newcomer Wise, who plays pilot Kayla Watts, said she felt reassured by her castmates on set.
“We went through trauma together and literally helped each other out,” she said. “I couldn’t have felt more supported and listened to and everything that makes you feel safe, seen and understood.”
Dern also told stories about the band’s close relationship, such as when she showed up in Wise’s bedroom to use his television before Wise woke up. The actress said she’s formed a strong “fellowship” with her on-screen and off-screen female co-stars, one that sets a good example for young women.
“…What I didn’t expect but should have had is to be in this experience and the gift of brotherhood that, not only were we like, ‘We’re badass female characters in this thing together’, but these women were helping me raise my daughter at one of the most difficult times in our history,” Dern said.
In an interview with Jonathan Dean of The Sunday Times in May, Dern and actor Sam Neill also reflected on their characters’ relationships in “Jurassic Park.” The actress said that while they “only now” acknowledge the 20-year age gap between their characters, many women working in tech and science “point to a similarity between Ellie’s heroism and the women in their field.
Neill and Jeff Goldblum also reprise their original roles in the franchise’s latest installment. “Jurassic World: Dominion” is in theaters now.
