Step up Suncoast was named 2021 of the region Bank of America Neighborhood Champion for his work in Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Sarasota and Manatee counties to enable individuals and families to achieve long-term economic stability through education, support services and community partnerships.
The organization will receive a grant of $ 50,000 from the bank to expand its Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) through intentional outreach with Title I schools in Manatee County. The FSS program financially supports individuals seeking a college or technical degree that will provide them with paid employment for life after graduation.
As a Neighborhood Champion, Step Up Suncoast will participate in a virtual leadership training from experts in the nonprofit sector on topics such as managing human capital, increasing financial sustainability and storytelling.
“With recent labor shortages brought on by the pandemic, local businesses face challenges as they seek to meet growing demand from customers, and nonprofits like Step Up Suncoast strive to foster the development of a skilled workforce by providing opportunities for career advancement and post-secondary education, ”said Mike McCoy, President of Bank of America Sarasota-Manatee. “For years, we have supported Step Up Suncoast’s goal of helping individuals lead the way to financial stability. Programs like Neighborhood Champions help these organizations grow in a sustainable and strategic way for lasting change in the community.
Along with Sarasota-Manatee, the bank will bring the Neighborhood Champions program to more than 42 additional communities in the United States this fall as part of its commitment to invest in long-term community health. The program is invitation-only for nonprofits who are ready to take their work to the next level. Prominent members of the community participated in a collaborative selection process to identify this year’s winner.
