Why you shouldn’t trust the Spider-Man No Way Home trailer

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer reveals the premise of the film, but given Marvel’s marketing history, it’s best not to be taken at face value.

Given the history of Marvel’s cheats, it’s best not to take the Spider-Man: No Path Home trailer at face value. The first look at Tom Holland’s third solo film as a wall-crawler was long overdue by Marvel-Sony standards when it debuted at CinemaCon and then around the world. Pointing to three minutes, the teaser for the trailer seemed to be straightforward. It lays out the premise of the film, which picks up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Jonah Jameson (JK Simmons) revealed her to the world. To make matters worse, the villain also blames Spider-Man for his murder. This puts Avenger friends and families like Ned (Jacob Batalon), MJ (Zendaya), and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) at risk, as they too are under public scrutiny. In an effort to rectify his situation, Peter reaches out to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). But instead of solving the growing problems, the sorcerer’s spell goes awry, making everything worse, as he may have exposed Earth to threats from the multiverse.

In all likelihood, however, the Spider-Man: No Path Home the trailer has several secrets in order to keep spoilers at bay, so it’s best not to take it at face value. In recent years, Marvel has gotten a lot smarter and more creative when it comes to their trailers, and therefore Sony for Spider-Man. Some shots used in the promo clips don’t even make it into the theatrical cut, while other footage is edited to remove a particular character or item, a trick used in Avengers: Infinity War trailers. The trailer’s silver bullet, for example, featured a fully transformed Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) when the reality was that Bruce Banner couldn’t coax the Hulk after his loss at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin). Deliberate editing also made it look like Loki would become a traitor again. Avengers: Endgame used similar techniques as well, with its trailer using a fake shot of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) arriving in Wakanda from his predecessor to hide Fat Thor’s debut.

Marvel Studios and Sony know how much interest there is in Spider-Man: No Path Home. Although it is not an ensemble film like Infinity war and End of Game, it certainly gets the same level of hype evidenced by its record breaking teaser, so expect them to use those same management mistakes and false scenes in marketing as well. Chances are there are some edited shots in the Spider-Man: No Path Home trailer that hides some intrigues. This includes potential characters involved in certain scenes, particularly action sets, particularly if former Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appear in the film, as leaks have suggested. There are already a number of subtle details in the teaser that can only be found by reviewing it multiple times. It is not beyond the realm of the possible that there is much more than that.

Although the marketing for Spider-Man: No Path Home started relatively late, there will be at least one more full trailer for the film. Until then, maybe Marvel Studios and Sony will reveal more information about the ramifications of Doctor Strange casting. No way homedangerous spell to help Peter. Even so, it’s still advisable not to trust what’s included in the promo as it’s right that the movie’s biggest surprises are in store for its theatrical debut.
